Dr Sophie Wushuang Yi is a Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow at Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University. She is also a Non-Resident Research Fellow at the Grandview Institution in Beijing and the Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellow at the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore.
Her academic and professional experience spans university teaching, policy research, international organisations, and Track 1.5 and Track 2.0 diplomacy.
Dr Yi’s research lies at the intersection of international security, strategic studies, and regional studies. Her work focuses on China’s defence posture and military identity, US–China strategic competition and signalling, Southeast Asian responses to great-power rivalry, and European security, with the South China Sea serving as a central empirical focus. She holds a PhD in International Relations from King’s College London and has published peer-reviewed research and book chapters, alongside more than 40 policy analyses and commentaries.
