Quick comment: Josh Kurlantzick on twilight warsQuick comment: Josh Kurlantzick on twilight wars
In this podcast, Josh Kurlantzick, Senior Fellow for Southeast Asia at the Council for Foreign Relations discusses twilight wars: those waged in the shadows, difficult for media to report and for legislators to monitor. Kurlantzick is the author of the recently published A Great Place to Have a War: America in Laos and the Birth of a Military CIA. The book explores the origins, substance and end of the US war in Laos and how it saw the CIA evolve from an intelligence gathering organisation to a military element in US foreign policy. Given how unpopular conventional warfare is among Americans, and President Trump's vow to eradicate radical Islamic terrorism, it seems inevitable paramilitary options will be favoured by the new administration. This will come with significant costs, Kurlantzick explains.
