Frontline reporting: Pacific journalists unpack geopolitics and security in a region in flux
The Pacific is changing fast — and few understand this better than the journalists covering it from the ground.
At this Lowy Institute event, ABC correspondents reporting from across the Pacific joined Mihai Sora, Director of the Lowy Institute's Pacific Islands Program, for a candid and wide-ranging discussion on the forces reshaping our near region.
With the United States stepping back from the Pacific under President Donald Trump, and Australia and China competing intensely for regional influence, the panel examined the compounding pressures facing Pacific nations — from climate change and transnational crime to internal instability and political upheaval.
Correspondents Chrisnrita Aumanu-Leong (Solomon Islands), Belinda Kora (Papua New Guinea), Marian Kupu (Tonga), and Lice Movono (Fiji) brought first-hand perspectives from four of the region's most strategically significant countries.
The event featured opening remarks from Andrew Griffiths, Head of Media and Communications at the Lowy Institute, and coincided with the second anniversary of the Pacific Local Journalism Network (PLJN) — a flagship program supported by ABC International Services under the ABC's Indo-Pacific Broadcasting Strategy.
