Dr Evan A Laksmana
Dr Evan A. Laksmana is Shangri-La Dialogue Senior Fellow and Editor of the Asia-Pacific Regional Security Assessment at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). He was a Nonresident Fellow at the Lowy Institute.
Dr Laksmana leads IISS's Southeast Asian Security and Defence research programme. Prior to joining IISS, he held senior research positions at the National University of Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Jakarta, Indonesia. He has also held nonresident and visiting research positions with Carnegie China, the Schmidt Futures International Strategy Forum, the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, the National Bureau of Asian Research, the University of Sydney's Southeast Asia Centre, the German Marshall Fund of the United States, and the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies.
His peer-reviewed research has appeared in journals including Journal of Contemporary Asia, Asian Security, Asian Politics & Policy, Defence Studies, Defense & Security Analysis, Asia Policy, Contemporary Southeast Asia, Harvard Asia Quarterly, and the Journal of the Indian Ocean Region. He has written for regional and global media outlets including Foreign Policy, Foreign Affairs, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Security Challenges, The Strategist, The Interpreter, and The Jakarta Post, and has co-written and co-edited books and special issue journals on Indonesian military policy and Southeast Asian security affairs. He has contributed to the work of global policy research institutions including RAND and the Brookings Institution, and has consulted for a range of international organisations and government agencies, including PRIO and UNODC.
He has taught international security and foreign policy, and lectured at universities and professional military education institutions in Indonesia, Singapore, and Australia. Dr Laksmana earned his PhD in political science from Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs as a Fulbright Presidential Scholar, and holds an MS in strategic studies from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
